B.K.A. National Kata & Kumite Squad Training

Sunday 6th May saw the re-forming of the British Karate Association National Squad taking place at the
Selwyn Jones Sports Centre near Warrington.. Squad Coaches; Sensei Brian Bentham 4th a former Squad Coach/manager teamed up with Sensei Peter Lee Bibby 4th Dan the current Chief tournament official for
The B.K.A. and Sensei Sarah Foster 2nd Dan Ladies National and International Kumite Champion.
Put the 20 plus students through a thorough warm up including a 1 mile run just to get the lungs fired up,
The group was then split as ; Sensei Pete Bibby took the kata section to one side as did Sensei Bentham and Sensei Foster with the kumite students. Sensei Bentham took the Seniors ,Sensei Foster
Took the juniors under her wing. Sensei Bentham who was with the BKA squad for about 12
Years prior to retiring from the position of Coach took the squad to many National &International tournaments during that period, gaining countless trophies along the way. He has now been forced out of retirement by Sensei Pete Bibby who wanted to see the BKA being represented again on the tournament circuit.
Sensei Bibby a Qualified Kata and Kumite official who gained his qualifications with Sensei Terry Pottage
Is just as keen to see the Squad up and running once again, together they hope to bring the glory for the BKA .

The second BKA Squad training session held again at the Selwyn Jones Sports Centre on Sunday 10th June saw even more BKA members turn out to train with the squad. This time the students where put through katas by Michael Crossley who kindly stood in for Sensei Bibby who was unable to attend due to a family bereavement.
They resumed the practice of 2 of the compulsory katas that Sensei Bibby had gone through with them on the first training session , the katas were Bassai Dai (Shukokai) and Jion (Shotokan) .
Sensei Sarah Foster worked again with the children who I might had were not lacking in enthusiasm , they gave 100% to any challenge put in front of them by Sensei Foster and enjoyed every minute of the 2 hour session.
Sensei Bentham worked with both the cadets and senior members in the kumite section, taking them through basic combinations to start with and then on to more advanced attacking and defensive combinations.
Sensei Bentham also worked on sweeping techniques demonstrating again both sweeping as a counter attack or as an attack by taking either the front leg or the supporting leg after evading a front kick. The students were keen to learn these techniques as they had never been shown how to sweep in ways other than the basic form.
